Grand National History

The Grand National race dates back to 1836 when The Duke won what is thought to be the inaugural running.  The 1836 – 1838 races however, are thought to have been raced at Maghull racetrack, rather than Aintree racecourse where the race has been held since 1839.  Every year since 1839, the Grand National race has been held at the Aintree racecourse in Liverpool, England, on a Saturday afternoon in early April.  The Grand National race is a handicap chase race that is run over 4 miles and 846 yards.  Over this distance there are 30 fences that the horses must leap over.  As you can tell the Grand National is not your ordinary horse race.

Popular Bets on the Grand National

The Grand National is often bet on by individuals who do not ordinarily wager on horses.  For this reason we have put together a couple paragraphs outlining the basics of horse racing betting.

The most popular type of horse racing bet would be a straight wager.  A straight wager can be either to win, place or show.  If you bet on a horse to win, the horse must finish the race first for your bet to payout.  If you wager on a horse to place, the horse must finish in the top two, and if you wager on a horse to show, the horse must finish in the top three positions.

Another type of wagers that generally pay out much more than straight wagers are exotic bets.  These bets involve betting on a variety of horses to finish in the top few positions.  You can either bet on the horses to finish in the exact positions of first through however many you choose, or you can bet on the horses to finish within that many positions.  For example, a quinnella bet inovlves wagering on two horses to come first or second.  Which horse finishes first or second doesn’t matter.  An exacta bet on the other hand requires you to choose which of the two horses will finish first and which will finish second.

That should teach you the basics of horse race betting.  Now head over to and place your bet on this years Grand National!
